When you meet Dr. Spencer Mauseth, you will find that he loves people! He especially loves serving and working with children. He has been in private practice for a number of years and has found working with children to be very rewarding. He enjoys teaching patients and parents alike about the science and art of cavity prevention. He knows a doctor can better serve patients with increased knowledge and information. He can always be found in the pursuit of new learning. Dr. Spencer is an ABPD board certified, pediatric dentist, where he maintains a Diplomate status. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Spencer completed his pediatric dental studies and residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. There, he learned the specialty of caring for the infant, toddler, child, and adolescents’ oral health needs. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Creighton University School of Dentistry and graduated Cum Laude. He was awarded numerous top honors and awards for ethics, patient care, clinical abilities, and academia. Among these was the school’s top honor, the Dr. and Mrs. Philip J. Maschka award. Upon his graduation from dental school, he became a member of the prestigious dental honor society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon. During his undergraduate schooling, he unknowingly made a good impression on faculty members, and was awarded a scholarship that was explained to him as a “nice guy” scholarship. When Dr. Spencer is finished caring for your child, you will find him with his own children. He and his wife Melodee, along with their five children, love spending family time running, reading, skiing, riding bikes, and enjoying life together.
Coming from a family of dentists back on the east coast, Dr. Pfeffer decided on dental school after working in Cancer Research. She missed the personal interaction that she saw in her family’s dental offices. This prompted her to obtain her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from an Ivy League institution while also obtaining a Masters in Biomedical Ethics from University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine. Here she served numerous leadership roles while winning 1st in the Nation for her scientific research and was one of 5 nationally to Intern at the American Dental Association. She carried out an Internship at two Dental Hospitals in London before being selected by her 1st choice, the University of Southern California for Hospital Residency. Here she worked with veterans, trauma victims, medically compromised, cancer patients and in the operating room for those patients with special needs. After which she continued on as the Top 1% to be accepted into Orthodontic Residency. From there Dr. Pfeffer pursued not only professional success but also has been recognized for her wide-spread philanthropy in the community. Winning numerous awards, serving on multiple boards and her continuous recognition in magazines and news sources, she has been a leading force in Dentistry for California as well as those less fortunate. When she’s not in the office she Volunteers as Faculty for UCSD’s Free Clinic and provides free screening and free treatment to those in need. Giving back to over 150 organizations both with her time and resources; she has spent her life becoming a role model for philanthropy in her community. Apart from dentistry much of her free time is spent outside of her profession, helping improve the lives of foster youth and the homeless.
Dr. Kristin Guptill always wanted to be a dentist. She loves her work! Dr. Guptill is a Jamaican native. She attended the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND on a track and academic scholarship, and graduated with BSc in Biology. After completing Dental School at the University of Detroit Mercy in Michigan, she also completed a GPR at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. Next Dr. G worked in Public Health in Grand forks, ND for 4.5 years (locum at the Spirit Lake Reservation and Life Skills and Transition Center for ID and DD patients).
As a Navy spouse, Dr. Guptill is part of our armed forces community. Her and her husband have 2 children, soon to be 3. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, trying new foods and keeping fit.
Dr Avi Willis is a specialist in pediatric dentistry. He received his DMD from Case Western Reserve’s School of Dental Medicine where he was awarded the top awards in pediatric dentistry and endodontics. Dr Avi completed a General Practice Residency at Jacobi Medical Center, a NYC trauma one hospital located in the Bronx. Whilst there, he received comprehensive training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, trauma, and treating children with special needs at the famous Rose F. Kennedy Center. He went on to complete his pediatric dental residency at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. Prior to moving to Southern California, Dr Avi was on staff at Jersey Shore Medical Center and an adjunct clinical instructor of Pediatric Dentistry at Temple University’s Kornberg School of Dentistry.
Dr Avi spent 5 years studying physics in the UK prior to dental school. He earned a first-class degree at the University of St Andrews and then a Master’s degree at the University of Cambridge.
Dr Avi is passionate about giving back to the community. He has volunteered time at the Greater Cleveland Medical Clinic as well as in Ohio elementary schools through the Healthy Smiles Sealant Program. In addition to local efforts, he has participated in an international dental mission in Israel, treating the children of Jerusalem.
As a second-generation pediatric dentist, it was through his mom that he saw the need for better oral care and the importance of prevention. He believes that every child is unique and that pediatric dentists can have a major impact on a child’s life.
In Dr Avi’s free time, he can be found spending time with his wife, Yonit, and baby, Ronen. He also enjoys skiing, cycling, playing the bagpipes, and spending time in Southern California’s beautiful parks and beaches.
Dr. Carlynn Chappell is an American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certified pediatric dentist.
She graduated with Honors in Neurobiology from the University of California UC Davis. She went on to earn her
Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded the
prestigious Dean’s Scholarship and Dr. Lowe Pediatric Dentistry Achievement Scholarship for her dedication to
community service and academic excellence. Upon graduation, Dr. Chappell was bestowed the top honors of The UCLA
School of Dentistry Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Pediatric Dentistry Awards. Dr. Chappell completed a
pediatric residency program at UCLA, and dedicated her time to treating underserved populations in organizations
such as Give Kids A Smile where she served as the UCLA President. She is also a member of the American Academy
of Pediatric Dentistry, California Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Southern California Society of
Dr. Chappell enjoys working with children and inspiring them to maintain healthy smiles! She hopes to create a
comfortable dental home and safe haven for families to learn how to care for their oral health. Her main goal is
to keep children healthy and happy as they grow, while fostering life-long relationships with her little
patients and their families.
In her free time, she enjoys cooking, playing tennis, watching movies, and exploring everything Southern
California has to offer!
Dr. Berchtold attended Utah State University from 1995-1998. He was commissioned as an Ensign,
United States Navy through the Health Professions Scholarship Program in January of 1998. He attended Virginia
Commonwealth University from 1998-2002 where he graduated magna cum laude and earned his D.D.S. He was inducted
as a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies upon graduation.
After graduation from dental school he attended an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in
Jacksonville, Florida. He attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry in the Department
of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics for three years of advanced training. There he served as the Chief
Resident for the Department during his last year of residency. He received a Masters Degree in Clinical
Dentistry as well as a Certificate in Orthodontics. After residency, he was stationed at a 13 area dental clinic
at Naval Dental Center Camp Pendleton (NDC CPEN). He set up the inaugural orthodontic practice at Camp Pendleton
and served as the orthodontic department head and the command orthodontic consultant among other command level
collateral duties. From NDC CPEN he received orders to Naval Medical Center San Diego. He was assigned to Naval
Base San Diego Branch Health Clinic. He was chosen as the assistant department head at Naval Base San Diego
Branch Health and Dental Clinic in charge of the dental clinic, the 123 personnel and its $23M renovation.
His next orders at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton started in April 2015 where he was selected and served as the
Director of Dental Services and served on the board of directors for the hospital until his transfer to Naval
Hospital Yokosuka in July 2017. At Naval Hospital Yokosuka, he was appointed as Associate Director for Dental
Services, the command Dental Corp Career Development Board manager as well as working as a staff orthodontist.
He received his board certification from the American Board of Orthodontics in 2019 during this time. From
Japan, he was stationed at the Naval Medical Readiness Training Command San Diego as a member of the
craniofacial team for the hospital and worked as an orthodontist to supplement the surgical treatment of
patients for the oral surgery residency.
Dr. Berchtold has been married for 26 years and has four children. Miranda, Jentry, Tate and Riley. His oldest
is married and will attend graduate school this summer and his youngest is still in elementary school. He enjoys
road bicycling, golfing, swimming, fitness, and eating good food and a little well known fact is that he has
completed 5 half ironman triathlons and 3 marathons.
With this new transition, we are excited to announce and introduce the addition of Dr. Berchtold to the
practice. He loves the interaction with patients and parents that orthodontics provides and is passionate about
creating a beautiful smile for you and your family.
